Romanesque and Gothic Arch (ART 320)
This course looks at the emergence of religious architecture, principally in Northern Europe, in 11th – 14th centuries. Firstly, the Romanesque will be examined, with particular reference to Tournai (Belgium), Durham (England), Santiago de Compostela (Spain) and St- Sernin (France). The transition to Gothic architecture (and sculpture) will then be observed with close studies of Saint-Denis (France) Canterbury Cathedral (England), Chartres Cathedral (France), Notre Dame (France), Cologne Cathedral (Germany), Milan Cathedral (Italy) and other selected examples. Students develop an awareness of the cathedral in society, of the engineering demands in their construction, in the attention to aesthetic detailing and to the inherent symbolism evident throughout. A special project will be conducted on the Gothic architecture of Famagusta.
